The Shepherd Was Struck So The Calf Could Dance

Zechariah 13 – Malachi 4

Today I finished by 2014 read through the bible, better late then never! It’s been another wonderful journey through the word. Looking into 2015 am still listening to the Lord for to what my daily devotional time will be. How about you, what has He invited you to do in that special time alone with Him every day?

The passages that stood out to me today were Zech. 13: 7, 9 and Malachi 4:2.

In Zechariah 13:

7 – “Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, And against the man, My Associate,” Declares the LORD of hosts.
“Strike the Shepherd that the sheep may be scattered;……

9 – …..They will call on My name, And I will answer them; I will say, ‘They are My people,’ And they will say, ‘The LORD is my God.’”

In Malachi 4:

2 – “But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings: and you will go forth and skip about like calves from the stall.”

I love that progression. We are coming into that time of year that heads us to the cross, to the time when we are reminded that the Shepherd, our Shepherd, the Shepherd of all mankind was struck down. Let us not forget it was “the LORD of hosts”, the Father, that called the sword to awake, the sword that struck His son for us. That was the means to our salvation but it was also a picture, a witness to the world of their true state and the state of our world today. When you strike the Shepherd the sheep scatter. When the world rejects it’s Shepherd, as we have done since the garden, then the people are scattered. We like sheep do run every direction looking frantically for what we need. We look everywhere but the one place, the one person who can lead us to and give us everything we need.

But, praise the Lord He did not stay struck, in the grave. He rose and called us back from the scattering. In our scattered-ness if we will call on his name (Zech 13:9) He will answer and will call us back to Himself to be his people and we will say “The LORD is my God” for then that is truly what He is. We then find the “sun of righteousness” rising in our lives. The light of a right relationship with our creator shining on us and it brings the healing we so desperately sought in our scattering.  Every day we can, if we allow ourselves, run and skip like a young calf springing from the stall in the golden light of that sun rise.

Lord draw my awareness to yourself today. Let me see you Shepherding me in everything I do today. Let the joy rise from my appreciation of the suffering you endured to call me home. May I not take for granted your calling me yours and may that joy overflow in outbursts of happiness and perhaps a skip or two….
